Sergi Mingote was a Spanish mountaineer, who has died while climbing K2, the world’s second-highest summit, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez declared Saturday.

“Sad Departure of Sergi Mingote in K2,” Sanchez tweeted. “He wished to keep on making history by being a part of their initial expedition to summit this mountain during winter and also a dreadful accident has finished his lifetime. A huge hug for your loved ones of the fantastic athlete.”

Mountaineer Mingote has expired during a climb of K2, the second-highest summit on Earth, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez declared on Saturday (Jan 16).”Sad passing of Mingote on K2.

He wished to continue making history by being a part of their first expedition to climb this mountain, and a tragic injury ended his life” Sanchez wrote on Twitter, describing him as a”good sportsman” and a buddy.

His passing came as a group from Nepal maintained the first winter ascent of Pakistan’s K2.

It was the previous summit above 8,000m to be topped in wintertime.

Mingote dropped down a crevasse because he tried to make his way down to Base Camp, Karrar Haidri, secretary of the Alpine Club of Pakistan, told Reuters.

Approximately 49 climbers in several teams are on K2 making efforts on the summit, weather allowing.

Career

Mingote, 49, had increased seven hills over 8,000m without supplemental oxygen less than two years.

First climbed in 1954 by Italian Achille Compagnoni, K2 is notorious because of its sleep slopes and high winds, and in winter its surface gets slick ice.

Of the 367 individuals who had finished its ascent from 2018, 86 had expired.
